“ I have been asked what I mean by ‘word of honor’ I will tell you: Place me behind prison walls- walls of stone ever so high, ever so thick, reaching ever so far into the ground- there is a possibility that in some way or another I might be able to escape; but stand me on the floor and draw a chalk line around me and have give my word of honor never to cross it. Can I get out of that circle? No, never! I’d die first.”
-Karl G. Maeser
In this quote what it is saying is that promises are meant to be kept and you are the center of it all when it comes to keeping a progress. In this quote, I would refer the circle as the circle of trust and spotlight. In this circle you are in the the main thing in the middle. To add on, in the circle that circle is your trust. Promises shall not be broken and they should be kept. The circle can be represented as the circle of trust, keeping your word, your arena of honor, etc. As for the example given, the circle was used as a way of respect and honorable. In the example he explains how if he was arrested and would have escaped, giving his word around a drawn circle of him, he would obey. The circle around him with his word provided gives a strong value of keeping promises. The word of honor is very valuable.
A great example that can fit this quote is two friends who promise each other to hang out to do something impactful for someone really close. In this example they are shared the given half of work to make the idea great, they both promised to do what was needed. To conclude, neither of them completed their promise and failed to complete their goal of an idea for another. As for the circle, the circle wasn’t draw around them or else the promises would have been kept.
